INTENTIONS COME TO LIFE – PART 4

But in order for agronomic science to play its big positive role in the struggle to solve this problem, it was necessary to finally defeat all supporters of reactionary views, all long-standing opponents of Michurin, Williams, Lysenko. The Morganists still fought against Michurin science, the limiters, the “mineral” agrochemists, the preachers of the “hereditary substance” – all of them continued to serve

An obstacle to the victorious development of advanced Soviet agrobiology.

And what Williams had been dreaming of for many years happened in 1948.

In August 1948, a session of the V.I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences was held, which marked the complete defeat of all idealistic reactionary movements in agrobiology, the complete triumph of Michurin science.

The successor of Michurin and Williams, academician T. D. Lysenko, in his report at the August session, revealed the depravity and futility of the Mendelism organism and firmly established the position of advanced Soviet agrobiology. He said in his report that “Darwinism, transformed in the light of the teachings of Michurin-Williams and thereby transformed into Soviet creative Darwinism, lies at the foundation of modern Soviet agrobiology.”

In the speeches of the participants in the August session, leading Soviet scientists, and public figures, the outstanding works of Williams were highly appreciated, which were increasingly widespread not only among agronomists and scientists, but also among the ever-growing number of leaders of the Soviet village.

The participants in the session received a storm of applause from a letter from the Ukrainian tractor driver Dmitry Palchenko read from the rostrum. He wrote about the significance that for him, as well as for a hundred other tractor drivers of the Sitkovetsky district, they had a book by Williams that they read, Fundamentals of Agriculture.

“Reading this book,” wrote Dmitry Palchenko, “every time I felt as though someone was removing the blindfold from my eyes. When I started using lushchevka, and then plowing with a skimmer, it seemed to me that in my brain the science of R. R. Williams lit up some special lights of knowledge and power, and they gave me the opportunity to clearly see the inside of the land I was cultivating – this great pantry high yields.

I well understood that the unstructured state of the soil, which we have on many collective farms, is a brake on our progress. But who will redo the soil, if not we tractor drivers brought up by the Soviet regime, the party, and Comrade Stalin? And so I now understand that the soil is cultivated not only by tractors and agricultural implements, but also by the roots of mixtures of perennial herbs. A tractor without grasses does not have the strength that it can have if tractor processing is carried out in the fields of grass field rotation. That is why I often admire the seed plants of our perennial herbs, especially timothy, which already has 26 hectares on our Yatsenko collective farm. This is tomorrow of our collective farm …

Now that I know what the herbs, lushevka, the use of the skimmer are, etc., I can’t be indifferent to how the grass is cultivated on the collective farm, whether they will send me to plow with or without a skimmer. If they send me to the collective farm without a skimmer, I will buy it for my money, but I will plow only with a skimmer. ”

The August session signified a complete, irrevocable victory of the advanced materialist trend in Soviet agrobiology. Scientific

institutions and experimental stations restructured their work based on the Michurin and Williams principles. The followers of Michurin and Williams came to the leadership of those institutes and laboratories, where until recently the supporters of the hated Williams “creeping empiricism”, formal genetics, armchair scientists divorced from the creative experience of the people still dominated.
